“It was a pivotal choice. It changed my life.” — Matt’s start with College Pro
“I’m a big believer that things happen for a reason,” Matt says, and this couldn’t be more true with the start of his career at College Pro. After missing the first few calls to sign up for College Pro, Matt happened to walk down a different hallway than usual on his university campus. “I just happened to walk past a College Pro booth, I thought I should turn around and go back and talk to him.” That ‘him’ would eventually become Matt’s general manager. Matt says he isn’t sure what drew him to go back and talk, but that he’s grateful it happened. “It was a pivotal choice. It changed my life.”
The moment that Matt signed up for College Pro may have happened by chance, but the entrepreneur life was a natural fit for Matt. When he first heard about College Pro he knew in his gut that it sounded like a perfect fit for him. “I just loved the idea of being my own boss,” Matt says. At the time, Matt was studying sport management at Brock, and wasn’t yet sure what type of career he wanted to pursue. But he knew it had to be something that would capitalize on his drive and work ethic, “it was all about betting on me” and College Pro gave him that chance to bet on himself and see what he’s capable of. “To me, joining College Pro is a no brainer to separate yourself from your peers and really grow.”
Starting Out With College Pro:
“Right from the get go it was an amazing experience,” Matt says of his start with College Pro. Matt was a late hire, and remembers feelings completely overwhelmed at the first training. “Once you really sink your teeth into it, it all starts to come together. I remember feeling really excited.”
Matt took on the challenge of running a window cleaning franchise, and did this for his first two years before being promoted to a field advisor by 2008 in his third year. When he graduated university in 2008, Matt was given the opportunity and challenge to pioneer College Pro Window Cleaning in Western Canada. He worked in Calgary with College Pro Window Cleaning from 2008 to 2011.
Lessons Along the Way
Matt spent three years running his College Pro franchise, and each year he learned a different distinct lesson. He says each year had a “theme.”
“My first year was all about building confidence” Matt says. Starting out, learning how to communicate a high level in order to manage his team and secure clients was the most important takeaway. Matt says that it was all about trusting himself as a leader, and slowly building his confidence.
For year two, it was all about problem solving! Running a franchise is a real challenge. When new problems arise it’s crucial that you buckle down and find solutions. In Matt’s second year with a franchise he developed his ‘Figure it Out’ attitude that he says has been crucial to get him to where he is today. ‘Figure it Out’ has since become a mantra that Matt lives by. It’s also the message on his license plate as a constant reminder to be resourceful and work hard.
“And my third year was all about leadership,” Matt says. In his third year running a franchise Matt became confident in his leadership skills and thrived while keeping others accountable in order to reach their goals. This was also the year Matt became a field advisor, which he says was the perfect role for him. Matt loves being able to support others in reaching their goals, which is exactly what he did.
“I loved it, I would have kept doing it!” — Matt’s Experience as a Multi-Year Franchisee
“I’m a big believer that you don’t get the full value unless you do it more than once,” Matt says about his experience returning to College Pro year after year. In his first year, Matt just barely hit his sales goal. He was so excited to come back a second year and push himself further and further the following years. “There’s just so much learning, you can’t fully capture it until you do it another year,” Matt says.
Matt’s advice for getting the most out of a College Pro experience is to treat it as a multi-year program and keep pushing yourself to reach new limits. “If anyone just does it one year, they’re leaving a lot on the table. And this is an experience you won’t get anywhere else.”
Why Window Cleaning?
When Matt started up, it was in the world of window cleaning! Matt was thrilled with his choice, and says it’s a mistake to look down on the window cleaning side of things.
“People look at window cleaning as the little brother to painting. But the opportunity there is huge. There are different challenges that come with both. The benefit that comes with window cleaning and the amount of moving parts is great.” Matt says.
For Matt, because window cleaning jobs are often shorter and less costly, it’s up to the franchisee to ensure they always have a good number of jobs and clients on the go. The experience of managing so many customers was really important for Matt to finetune his customer service skills and make sure he was always working proactively to keep up with a large customer base.
“Handling the amount of customers to run a window cleaning business takes a lot of work!”
From College Pro to Now:
Matt’s journey from College Pro to today has been defined by his ambition, drive and by pursuing new challenges. After three years as a franchisee, which Matt calls “one of my most enjoyable work experiences ever,” he took on a different role with College Pro. He headed West to pioneer the window cleaning program in Alberta. Starting up the program was a major success! And he worked in this role from 2008 to 2011.
It was towards the end of this time that he first began working with Arbonne on the side. When he was looking for a change, he began working in corporate sales for Cintas between 2012 and 2014. He worked for College Pro’s sister brand CertaPro as a general manager in development from 2014 to January 2018. Matt loved that he was given the chance once again to lead and work with individuals to help them reach their goals. In 2018, Matt decided to focus fully on his role with Arbonne where he is an Independent Consultant with Arbonne International and their Regional Vice President. Currently, Matt is busy as ever as he focuses on expanding with Arbonne, developing multiple e-commerce brands, and growing his real estate investment portfolio.
“It was the most formative and incredible experience.”
Matt says he owes so much of his success to what he learned with College Pro, especially his years out West pioneering the window cleaning program. “I’m a big a believer that it was the most formative and incredible experience. It gave me abilities I needed to put forward into my life and succeed.”
Advice from Matt:
“I’m a big believer that you can anything you want in life as long as you help others. I want to help others build their success. I’m happy to have been able to help a lot of people. It’s all about paying it forward!”
